The Bowie County Master Gardeners and Texas A&M-Texarkana’s Extended Education and Community Development Department will host the program “All About Blackberries” on Monday, August 12, 2024, from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM. The event is free and open to the public. The class will take place in the University Building, Room 326. No reservation is required to attend.
The program will be presented by Chris Engledowl, a Miller County Master Gardener and local blackberry grower. A question-and-answer period will follow the presentation.
In the South, blackberries hold an honored place not just on our dinner table but in our memories as well. For many of us, one taste of a blackberry cobbler instantly brings back thoughts of childhood summers spent picking them with loved ones. Blackberries are some of the first fruits of the season, with the white flowers in spring followed by clusters of fruit that turn from green to red before ripening to black. New cultivars of blackberries can produce large berries on thorn-free canes, making it easier than ever to pick enough to eat fresh now and make a batch of jelly to enjoy with some fresh biscuits later.
