The new postmaster says he wants to use his position to increase relationships between the postal staff and the community.
June 10, Tony Lambert began the position of postmaster at the New Boston Post Office.
“I’m the ambassador for the post office here in New Boston,” Lambert said. “I want my carriers and my clerks to deal with the public as they are dealing with their family members.”
Lambert came to New Boston after completing a contract with Avinger.
Lambert is a 24 year veteran of the postal service. He began his career as a mail carrier in Garland, Texas, in May 2000. He also held positions in Greenville, Navasota, Longview and Lone Star.
He is also a veteran of the United States Air Force. He served ten years active duty and 15 years as a reservist. Lambert grew up in Longview, the seventh of nine children. Through his career choices, he said he followed a trend set by four of his older brothers. Two served in the Air Force and two took positions in postal service.
“I am the first one to ever become postmaster,” he said.
He first earned the position of postmaster in December at the Lone Star Post Office.
Lambert said that what sets him apart and makes work enjoyable for him is his attitude about the work.
“I love to have fun. I love to joke. There’s a thing in this country where we feel like if you’re a boss, you have to be a butt. It’s not true. I’m not a boss, I’m their coworker,” Lambert said.
But, delegating and not actively doing certain jobs has been the hardest thing for him to master as the boss.
“The hardest part of my job is to delegate employees to do things,” he said. “In the Air Force, it was all about teamwork. Here, I’m still part of the team, I’m just the one calling the plays instead of executing them now.”
Lambert and his wife of 22 years, K-Von, have made Bowie County their home.
K-Von is a fourth-grade teacher at Crestview Elementary.
“I have five years until I’m able to retire,” he said. “I’m not here to check a box and move on. I own land here … my wife teaches here. We invested in the community.
“This is my last promotion. So when I retire, I’m going to be here.”
