Nathan Mallett and Jeremy McDonald of the Simms Volunteer Fire Department clean up the remains of a charred 2016 Subaru Forester sport utility vehicle following a one-vehicle accident on Farm to Market Road 561 in Simms that left one person dead Thursday night. The accident happened about 8 p.m. Thursday. The driver, Richard Stahl, 63, of Simms, was traveling west on FM 561 and failed to negotiate a curve in the roadway. The vehicle struck a tree and caught fire. Stahl was not wearing a seatbelt and was thrown from the vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Simms volunteer firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze and began clearing the scene about 10:30 p.m. Tribune photo by Susan Lindsey
