An accidental fire made quick work of a building demolition in New Boston Wednesday afternoon.
The fire started about 2 p.m. at 706 N. McCoy Blvd. The building, formerly Texas Car Title and Payday Loan, was in the process of being demolished when the blaze broke out.
Fire officials said demolition crews were cutting metal from the building when sparks ignited the insulation. Since there was no electricity to the building, the demolition crew had planned to let it burn out. However, a passerby saw the flames and called 911 just after 3 p.m.
The New Boston Volunteer Fire Department responded to the call, which initially stated the fire was located at the neighboring McDonald’s. When firefighters arrived, the building was completely consumed.
Since they were dispatched, city ordinance required firefighters to put out what remained of the fire.
A representative from the demolition company said the fire made Wednesday’s job the fastest they have worked.
The location will be the site of a Starbucks Coffee Co. coming to New Boston. There are no details yet on when building will begin.
