Redwater junior Kiley Harrrison received two awards from the Lone Star Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution last week. She was presented the awards for her artwork in the Junior American Citizens’ Art and Creative Expression Contest Through the JAC Committee, the DAR sponsors the contest each school year. The contest includes the following categories: poster, stamp design, digital design, digital art, poetry, short story and other categories. It is a local and national contest.
Each year, a different theme is chosen, which celebrates a historic event or the commemoration of an American treasure. The theme this year was “The 200th Anniversary of the Santa Fe Trail: Moving the Stars and Stripes Westward.”
Harrison’s poster entry was recognized as the 1st place winner for Redwater High School at the district level and then was determined to be the 1st place winner in the Area overall for 11th grade. Her design portrayed the historic movement of people along the Santa Fe Trail. “Kiley’s entry creatively depicted a locomotive, a horse and covered wagon and other elements of the frontier along the Santa Fe Trail, using bold color pencil,’ Junior American Citizen Chair for the Lone Star Chapter of DAR Marjorie Fuerst said. .”The Lone Star Chapter of the DAR is proud to have Kiley’s artwork represent our area and chapter in the Texas State contest.”
